Autumnal (2022)

Listen to the piece

  • Instrumentation: Piano, violin.

  • Description: Originally conceived as a piano duet for two of my students, I turned this into a short work for piano and violin to celebrate my favorite season of the year. It contains a couple sections to represent the autumn leaves and fun daytime fall activities, like apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and corn mazes; and the dark nighttime holiday, Halloween, in the low end of the piano.

  • This piece can be broken fairly neatly into three sections - a triptych, of sorts. The first section introduces the "light" melody, comprised of parallel fifths and a static accompaniment. The second section starts with the low piano, with the violin playing softly above it. The music then builds to an intense version of the opening motif blending with the darker melody and meandering violin on top. The third section calms back into a recap of the first, with the violin holding the same tremolo as at the start, before the final chord ends the work.
