Violin TV (2021)

Listen to the piece

  • Instrumentation: Violin, electronics, video

  • Description: Inspired by the eclecticism of concert series like the BBC Proms and New Music Collage, where this piece will be premiered, I wanted to write a piece that celebrated my favorite instrument and the idea of rapidly changing styles, similar to short mini challenges in video games like Nintendo's WarioWare series. The idea of adding a '90s VHS quality to the visuals and audio helped create a unique process of editing a video in addition to cutting off the lows and highs to create a warmer, nostalgic sound.

  • The piece's structure is as if we are watching a '90s VHS tape of a violinist playing a different piece or style on different TV channels, and the viewer who recorded this is flipping through them to find something they like. I was inspired by YouTube videos of people flipping through what was on TV in 1987 or 1991. The piece includes quotations or modifications of a few famous violin works and a few of my own compositions. It ends with a bit of a joke to let viewers know this is mostly a comic and light-hearted piece.
